Sometimes it is nice to get away from it all so I decided that this week I
will drive all the way from Phoenix, Arizona to New Mexico to see Carlsbad
Caverns. It's over 600 miles but what the heck -- the price of gasoline is
plummeting to under $3 a gallon. I might as well burn my share of this limited
resource before it's too expensive to afford. In case you didn't know,
Carlsbad is a big cavern near the border with Mexico and it has lots of bats!
Find out more about it here:

I told a few people about my trip, and our plans to do some hiking in Southern
New Mexico, and I got the following for a response. Seriously folks, if it was
up to you guys I would be afraid to step out of my front door.
Perhaps the New Mexico Tourism department or the Better Business Bureau should
have this disclaimer on their website:
Be VERY careful in the Gila Wilderness -- my husband and I drove
up that way and hiked at the ruins. The area has incredibly
strange people. Might want to bring your binoculars ... lots of
nude hikers in the area and some times one can spot them from the
roadway. Be absolutely sure that you don't let your gas tank go
below 1/2 a tank while in that area. Great country if it
weren't for all those odd people ... lots, and lots, and lots of
drugheads in the area. I would assume they now have increased
numbers of illegal aliens hiding in the area. Las Cruces to
Alamagordo is a MAJOR drug running area. If you cross over that
way ... at night be careful of illegals on foot crossing the
highways and of course DO NOT help a stranded motorist because
they are more than likely involved in illegal drug trafficking.
Should you travel north up the Gila to Reserve .. gas up for sure
and be ultra careful in the town of Reserve. Lots of ex-felons
from both Arizona and New Mexico live in Reserve. High numbers
of sex offenders, druggies, and a combination of them who have
firearms that they often use to threaten folks with.
Have a wonderful vacation in lovely New Mexico!
Yeah, thanks a lot! That advice is really helpful and I'm sure my vacation
will be enhanced every time I think about it.
___ Just in case some of it is true I will bring binoculars. ___
FYI --- I will probably not be going through Las Cruces at night, and I will
only visit the Southern part of the Gila Wilderness.
In order to keep you guys busy for a few days while I'm gone, Information Week
did an extensive series of articles on H-1B.

U.S. Visa Holders Live With Uncertainty
I don't have time to comment on these articles because I am too busy looking
for my binoculars. Overall this is a good series even though there are plenty
of things that are just plain wrong. This one really got my
goat:
Many of the people critical of the current H-1B program advocate
curtailing it significantly, or doing away with it altogether,
in favor of a plan that puts qualified foreign technology workers
on a fast track for permanent residency without tying sponsorship
to a particular employer. This would eliminate the possibility of
exploitation of the visa holder, while making it more likely
that wages would be competitive.
For sure there are many people who are dumb enough to think that issuing
instant green cards is the way to solve the H-1B problem, like IEEE for
example. I for one think that's just a way to make a bad problem worse.
Since I have explained why dozens of times in this newsletter, and I have a
webpage dedicated to the subject, I'll just stop here.
