The Washington Post has officially endorsed Harris Miller as the best
candidate in the Virginia Democratic primary. The WP didn't miss a chance
to stab James Webb a parting blow by calling him a xenophobe.
Harris "the Shiller" Miller sure has a lot of chutzpah, and I don't mean
that just because he is Jewish. Consider these points:
1) Miller is using the fact that he was a corporate lobbyist as a virtue -
and the Washington Post is playing along with him. Since when it become a
virtue to get paid by corporations to destroy the American middle class?
Miller is just a shill-for-hire but that seems to be OK with the WP.
2) Miller claims that he is "a shorter, poorer version of Mark Warner."
Actually I would describe him as a pudgy dork with a shirt and tie.
Charismatic Miller isn't, but I wouldn't be surprised if every time he gets
into one of his vintage Mercedes he can't stop looking at himself in the
rear view mirror and repeating Stuart Smalley's daily affirmation:
"I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough, and Doggone It,
People Like Me!"
Daily Affirmations With Stuart Smalley.
3) Miller told the Washington Post he was "an early advocate of the
internet as a vehicle for job creation." That may be true, but the jobs
Harris Miller created with the internet were in India.
4) Miller brags that his "campaign has twice as much money on hand as Jim
Webb's." Well heck, that's a show stopper isn't it? Since he has more money
he must be the patron saint of global corporatism. Why didn't the WP
investigate where that cash came from, or does that just not matter
nowadays?
The Washington Post did have a valid criticism of James Webb that is very
similar to what I wrote yesterday - James Webb is fuzzy on the issues:
But since announcing his candidacy he seems to have given
scant time and attention to issues ranging from education
to tax policy to immigration.
The WP statement is not entirely fair to James Webb, because Harris Miller
is quite fuzzy also - that is when he isn't flat out lying. Miller totally
avoids the immigration issue on this website, of course we know why - he
doesn't want he lobbied to give every willing worker in the world a guest
worker visa so that rich corporations can exploit them like slaves. Miller
brags about all sorts of things but stays silent when it comes to his
lobbying activities on behalf of H-1B. Naturally the WP plays along by not
mentioning Harris Miller's long career in the slave trade.
If you can find specifics about immigration on Miller's website, please let
me know. Start your search on his issues page:
http://www.miller2006.org/agenda.jsp
It would be very easy for James Webb to box Harris Miller into a corner by
attacking him on issues where he is most vulnerable, like H-1B or his
lobbying in the 1980s on the behalf of farmers to get cheap Mexican farm
labor. Webb's avoidance allows Harris Miller to spin his corporate
propaganda to the mainstream media without serious challenge.
When it comes to immigration related issues most Democrats seem to be
completely paralyzed and James Webb is no exception. Recent endorsements by
labor unions such as the "Laborers International Union" and the Sheetmetal
Workers could contribute to this paralysis since most unions are very
intolerant of anyone who dares to question open borders. You can bet that
Harris Miller is fully aware of these endorsements and will take full
advantage of Webb's reluctance to take H-1B, L-1, H-2B, or other related
immigration issues on.
Webb is trying to shoot Miller with a pop-gun instead of using the H-BOMB.
It's a bad mistake to let Miller off so easily. Webb's lack of fervor
against Miller's lobbying leads me to wonder whether he would be willing to
take on Sen. George Allen's support for the Skil Bill. Currently Allen is
polling at 60% popularity and Webb and Miller are about 20% each. At this
point Webb has very little to lose because in a close election Miller will
be sure to win, even if he has to call his buddies at Diebold!

Mr. Miller's Advantage
Our choice in Virginia's Democratic primary for U.S. Senate
Friday, June 2, 2006; A18
THE CONTEST in Virginia between the two candidates seeking the Democratic
nomination for U.S. Senate is easily caricatured as war hero vs. wonk. One
candidate, James Webb of Falls Church, is a scrappy former Marine and
much-decorated Vietnam veteran with impressive literary credentials and an
Emmy Award to his name. The other, Harris Miller of Fairfax County, is a
longtime Democratic party apparatchik whose passion for public policy
contributed to his success as a telecommunications lobbyist. Some Democrats
have convinced themselves that only a candidate with Mr. Webb's risumi
and panache stands a chance of knocking off incumbent Sen. George Allen, a
Republican with a daunting track record of electoral success. But that
would be missing a key point, which is this: Of the two primary candidates,
Mr. Miller is the better-briefed, better-focused and more thoughtful. He
would make the better senator.
Mr. Webb -- fluent in Vietnamese, champion of veterans' causes, successful
novelist and Hollywood screenwriter -- is an undoubtedly compelling figure.
Having served President Ronald Reagan as secretary of the Navy, he has
recently recast himself as a Democrat out of disgust for the Bush
administration's policies on a range of issues.
He was an early and prescient critic of the war in Iraq and its likely
consequences, a stand that won him converts in the blogosphere and beyond.
But since announcing his candidacy he seems to have given scant time and
attention to issues ranging from education to tax policy to immigration, as
if the cachet of his military past excuses him from having to master the
pressing questions of the present -- not the best trait for a candidate for
the Senate. Mr. Webb's somewhat strident populism on trade policy tends
toward xenophobic sloganeering and business-bashing. And while he is right
to focus concern on the widening disparities of Americans' income and
wealth, his ideas about the problem's causes and possible antidotes are
sketchy.
As for Mr. Miller, it is, admittedly, an inopportune year for a candidate
to have the word "lobbyist" appended to one's name. Nonetheless, he makes
no apologies for it, nor for having been an early advocate of the Internet
as a vehicle for job creation. Whatever his deficits in dash and elan --
"I'm a shorter, poorer version of Mark Warner," he says of the popular
former Virginia governor -- Mr. Miller is a forceful, smart, unapologetic
proponent of his views.
He is an astute critic of America's sluggish response to the challenges
posed by an interwoven global economy and a tough-minded backer of
budgetary restraint and fiscal sanity -- or, as he puts it, the need to
curtail the era of instant gratification in politics. We may not share Mr.
Miller's outlook on some issues, such as his distaste for standardized
testing as a means to lift schools' quality. But there is no doubting the
thought he has devoted to his positions, which are on the moderate end of
the Democratic Party's spectrum. Virginians would be well served by having
a lawmaker of Mr. Miller's evident energy, commitment and depth.
The primary will take place June 13.

Washington Post Endorses Harris Miller
The Miller campaign is surging! Our campaign has twice as much money on
hand as Jim Webb's, we continue to pull in key endorsements like Kate
Michelman and key IBEW local unions, our ads are up on TV statewide, and
today the Washington Post endorsed Harris Miller for U.S. Senate:

550,000-member Union Endorses Webb for Senate

One more great endorsement in what will likely turn out to be universal
labor support for Jim Webb's candidacy against corporate
lobbyist/outsourcer extraordinaire, Harris Miller. Nice.
Laborers International Union Endorses Jim Webb
LIUNA: Its Clear Who Is on The Side of Working Families in This Primary
Today, the Laborers International Union of North American endorsed Jim
Webb for United States Senate. The announcement of the endorsement was made
by Laborers Mid Atlantic Regional Vice President Dennis Martire.
"When Virginia working families look at the Senate race, its clear who
is on their side. Thats why today the Laborers have endorsed Jim Webb
for the United States Senate," said Martire.
The Laborers' International Union of North America has eight locals in
Virginia and over 550,000 members in the United States and Canada. The
union includes workers involved in construction, waste management, stone
cutters, lumberjacks, cleaning and domestic staff, and mining.
"Im extraordinarily thankful for the support of the Laborers Union,"
said Webb. "In Virginia and throughout the country, good paying jobs
continue to be sent to other countries by greedy international
corporations. When Im Virginias U.S. Senator, I will become the
leader of the anti-outsourcing of American jobs. We should export our
products, not our jobs."

Sheet Metal Workers Endorse Webb, Slam Miller

From the Webb campaign comes this, the first in what will undoubtedly be a
long, LONG line of union endorsements for Jim (bolding added for emphasis;
sorry Waldo!):
Sheet Metal Workers Endorse Jim Webb for Senate
SMWIA: "Jim Webb is a true friend of the American worker"
(Arlington) Today, Jim Webb, candidate for U.S. Senate, received the
endorsement of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association.
"Jim Webb is a true friend of labor and of the American worker. He
understands the difficulties faced by working Americans and he is a true
ally in the battle against outsourcing of their jobs," said Vince Panvini,
Government Affairs Director of the Sheet Metal Workers of America
International Association. "The Sheet Metal Workers International
Association is proud and honored to wholeheartedly endorse Jim Webb for the
United States Senate. His will be a voice for all working Americans."
The Sheet Metal Workers International Association represents 150,000
skilled craftspeople in the unionized sheet metal industry throughout the
United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
"Jim Webb's primary opponent is no friend of unions and no friend of
working Americans. Harris Miller's public record attacking unions and
working Americans is shocking and well documented. Miller has publicly
opposed unions and has been a leading proponent of outsourcing American
jobs. He has been a lobbyist for some of the biggest anti-union corporate
entities in America. He supported George Bush's tax cuts to the rich. He
has given personal campaign contributions to some of the biggest Republican
anti-union members of Congress including Spencer Abraham and John Sununu.
Miller even supported anti-union Attorney General John Ashcroft. Harris
Miller is no friend of working Virginians," said Panvini.
[...]
"One of the fundamental issues of my campaign is to appeal to voters to
allow me to become the 'leader of stopping job outsourcing in the U.S.
Senate," said Webb. "I am proud to have the leaders and proud Americans of
the Sheet Metal Workers International Association join me in my fight."
This is what many of us have been saying for weeks, if not months now,
about Jim Webb on the one hand, and HarrisMillerGeorgeAllen on the other.
It's nice to know that the Sheet Metal Workers see it the same way.
