Ambush at Senator McCain's office
Ambush at Senator McCain's office
Date: Tuesday, May 23, 2006 5:07 PM
<<<<< JOB DESTRUCTION NEWSLETTER No. 1485 >>>>>
Roy Beck of NumbersUSA has called upon concerned Americans to visit our
local Senator's offices in order to voice our opposition to the Senate
Immigration Bill S. 2611. Today 6 of us in Arizona heeded the call to arms
by visiting the Phoenix offices of McCain and Kyl.
All of us were venting big time about McCain's support for S. 2611 and his
disgusting association with Kennedy. We never let the staffers get away
with snowing us - and they tried many times. I suspect we may be the
toughest and most informed group of activists they have had to deal with.
By the time we left you can bet they were glad the ambush had come to an
end!
I gave the head staffer at McCain's office a list of questions to give to
McCain. She promised she would deliver the questions. If I don't receive
answers within a reasonable amount of time I will call her to ask when
McCain is going to send me the answers.
Here are my questions to Sen. John McCain:
1) You promised that you would pay $50 an hour to Americans who would come
down to Arizona to pick lettuce. ProjectUSA lists thousands of Americans
who said they are willing to do this. You promised them a job, and now it's
your turn to live up to the agreement. When specifically do you plan to
hire some of these willing American workers?
NOTE: One of the staffers defended McCain by saying that his offer of $50
an hour was only rhetorical.
If you are qualified to pick lettuce for $50 an hour sign up here:
http://www.projectusa.org/
2) On May 16, 2006 on the Senate floor you claimed that we need guest
worker visas in order to save restaurants and farms. Your exact quote is:
More importantly, there are certain realities in America today that we
are trying to address. Among them, that the American population is
growing older. The baby boomers are retiring and leaving in their wake
a number of jobs that need to be filled. Restaurants are locking their
doors because there is no one to serve the food or clear dishes.
Today, fruit is rotting on the vine and lettuce is dying in the fields
because farmers can't find workers to harvest the crops.
John McCain, please give me the Arizona addresses of the following:
a) Restaurants that are shutting their doors because they can't find
enough dishwashers and/or food servers.
b) The names and locations of the farms in Arizona that have fruit rotting
on the vine and/or lettuce rotting in the fields because they don't have
enough workers.
NOTE: The same staffer defended McCain by saying that his statement to the
Senate about restaurants and fruits were another example of his rhetorical
style. I retorted that what McCain said should be considered contempt of
Congress and that he should be impeached for lying to our nation unless he
can back up what he said.
Next we visited Sen. Kyl's office:
Two of us really got into the H-1B issue with Kyl's staffer. Although he
was far more courteous than anyone at McCain's office, he tried to claim
that Kyl tried to reduce the cap on H-1B by half. He quickly found out that
he was trying to bamboozle the wrong person! I explained to him that Kyl
has voted in favor of every single increase in the H-1B cap since its
inception in 1990. I then whipped out a fact sheet that showed the increase
in H-1B, green cards, and F-4 that is proposed in S. 2611. We all made it
very clear that we will not vote for Kyl if he votes for S. 2611, and I
wasn't the only one that was angry about Kyl's support of H-1B.
The staffer was also reminded that since Bush recently did a fund raiser
for Kyl in Arizona we consider him a Bush toadie. He tried to convince us
that Kyl didn't go along with everything Bush wants on immigration but he
quickly dropped that defense when he realized he was fooling nobody.
Our message to Kyl is that the only way he can prove he isn't a Bushie is
to vote against S. 2611.

Talking points for Senators who aren't sure NO votes on the amnesty
DEAR FRIENDS,
I will not mislead you -- we are short of the 41 votes needed to defeat
cloture on the S. 2611 amnesty.
But our allies in the Senate are continuing to fight, with major news
conferences, points of order and speeches on the floor.
They need the support of every one of you who can pick up a phone today --
or who can go visit an office.
I am sending state-specific alerts to many of you today with advice on
specifically going after your Senators.
But I am sending this to all of you so you can be working the phones right
now.
Everything you do has to have the urgency of a people who know that
tomorrow their U.S. Senate very well may vote to put an end to America as
we know it.
Do you think I am overstating the case?
Just imagine our current country of 300 million Americans (50 million of
whom are foreign workers, immigrants and dependents).
Now imagine adding 66 million more foreign workers and dependents over the
next 20 years -- plus all the babies that they and immigrants already here
will have.
Nothing about this country today will be the same 20 years from now!
Imagine the congestion, the sprawl, the loss of personal mobility, freedom
and access to open space!
That vote in the Senate is tomorrow. Are you going to sit this one out? Or
are you going to pick up a phone?
You have to use the phone today to make your Senators' staffers feel the
fear that voters will one day find out.
TARGETS TODAY
Look at my Alerts from yesterday to get the lists of the Senators who are
not for-sure NO votes but who also have shown signs that they could be
persuaded.
Those alerts are at:
www.numbersusa.com/actionalerts
If any Senators from your state are on the list, call them.
Next, call Senators from states with small populations, since our
membership is smaller there and they may not be getting that many calls.
For home-state phone numbers for any Senator, go to:
www.numbersusa.com/contactcongress.html
Before you call, make sure you have looked at my Alert to see how the
Senator has been voting.
TALKING POINTS
No. 1. If your Senators vote YES on S. 2611, they will spend the rest of
their careers explaining why they voted to:
reward 8-12 million illegal aliens with an amnesty allowing them to
permanently take American jobs and become U.S. citizens
entice millions more foreign workers to illegally enter our communities,
crowd the housing and schools, take the jobs and depress the wages because
they reasonably can believe they eventually will be given an amnesty, too
double legal immigration from 1 million to 2 million a year, when our
traditional annual immigration has been only 250,000 and when most
Americans say legal immigration already is too high
give out permanent green cards to up to 66 million foreign workers and
dependents over the next 20 years
No. 2: S. 2611 is not just a controversial bill. Rather, it would
dramatically change most occupations and communities in America with the
largest movement of foreign workers in world history.
No. 3: If they vote for S. 2611, you are part of a large network of the
state's voters who will work diligently to make sure:
that the public will come to know them by the nickname of Senator Amnesty
that they will be derided at every appearance as an enemy of the working
families and local communities of your state.
No. 4: Emphasize that it is not being obstructionist to vote AGAINST
cloture on S. 2611 because:
they know as well as you that the bill has not truly been investigated as
to its overall effects and the ability of the government to carry it out
without massive fraud and social disruption.
It just doesn't make sense to have a vote on this bill at this time. No
matter what deals they may think they've made, they owe it to themselves
and the people of your state to vote AGAINST cloture, against allowing the
bill to have a chance to be passed at this time.
IF A SENATOR HAS AN OFFICE IN YOUR CITY, GO THERE TODAY
While their phones are ringing off the hook, the staffers would feel even
more under fire today if as many of you as possible personally enter their
offices.
Print out Grade Cards and Profiles so you can hand them to staffers and
talk about past actions. Talk about how much better their Grade Cards will
be with a NO vote on the amnesty.
Print out these talking points to use if you need them.
Talk through the specifics of what S. 2611 will do. Most staffers will have
no idea of how radical this bill is.

Fact Sheet about Legal Immigration and S. 2611
NOTE: If any of you want a Word formatted version of this fact sheet, just
ask and I'll send you an attachment.
Permits up to 217 million legal immigrants into the United states over the
next 20 years, a number equal to 66 percent of the total current population
of the United States. This is a summary of the American middle class jobs
that will be sacrificed if 2611 becomes law.
* H-2C Workers: By creating a new (H-2C) visa category for "temporary low
skilled guest workers" with an annual cap of 325,000 that increases up to
20 percent each year the cap is met. Low skilled means everyone who doesn't
have an advanced degree in math, science, or engineering!
* H-4 Visa: A new visa category (H-4) for the immediate family members of
the future low-skilled workers (H-2C).
* H-1B: Increase the annual cap of 65,000 to 115,000, automatically
increase the new cap by 20 percent each year the cap is hit, and creates a
new exemption to the cap for anyone who has an "advanced degree in science,
technology, engineering, or math". H-1B affects workers such as computer
programmers, engineers, scientists, school teachers, nurses, accountants,
and fashion models.
H-1B workers are eligible for green cards and would be allowed to stay and
work in the United States for as long as it takes to process the green card
application.
* Employment Based Green Cards The bill would increase the annual cap on
employment-based green cards by more than 500 percent, upping the current
cap of 140,000 to 450,000 until 2016 and to 290,000 thereafter and
exempting all immediate family members that currently count against the cap
today (spouses, children and parents) from the newly escalated cap.
* F-4 Visas: This new visa allows foreign students to work as they go to
school, and then to look for work for up to one year after graduating. They
are put on a fast track to a Green Card if they do find work, so they don't
even have to get an H-1B first.
In today's competitive job market U.S. college students depend on
internships to get the experience to land a job when they graduate. The F-4
visa puts U.S. students in direct competition for internships with foreign
students. U.S. students who depend on internships to earn money while they
go to school will find that these once cherished opportunities are
evaporating. This will be another good reason for U.S. students to avoid
technical and science degree programs and it will contribute to the erosion
of our technological infrastructure.
