Employees at KLA-Tencor in San Jose, CA got some very bad news last night.
They were told that they will be required to train a crew of Indians that
will be arriving in the morning. After their replacements have been
adequately trained their employment will be terminated after 60 days. Once
trained, the Indians will be moved back to India to resume operations. The
most likely location for the Indians to set up the BPO will be in
Nungambakkam, Chennai.

About 15-20 once-loyal employees in the Accounts Payable department are
affected. These jobs are considered back office and are mostly clerical. As
we all know the BPO business is booming in India, and KLA-Tencor wants to
join the party.

The Indians are downstairs at this moment as HR processes them in. The
Tencor employees are upstairs waiting to be marched to the execution
chamber. Everyone is walking around like zombies. People are crying. It's a
bad situation at Tencor right now.

Tencor is using the 60 days employment to blackmail the American employees
into training their Indian replacements. If they don't train their
replacements they will be fired on the spot. Gracious of them, huh?

Tencor employees get one week severance pay for every year they have
worked. Many companies threaten to withold severance pay as part of the
blackmail threat but I don't know if Tencor is doing that.

Coincidentally the Tencor office where the ritual bloodletting is being
carried out is just a few miles away from Hewlett Packard where Carly
Fiorina proclaimed that "There is no job that is America's God-given right
anymore."

To find out more about this company go to their website:

I don't know at this time what visas are being used to bring the Tencor
Indians into the U.S., but the most likely choice would be L-1 visas.
That's because all Tencor would have to do is to apply for intra-company
transfers from Nungambakkam.

Keep in mind that although this story is tragic it's not unique. Replacing
American workers with the cheap young blood of foreign labor is happening
all over the country, and it's legal for employers to use L-1 visas in this
fashion. Basically this is merely a business transaction to save money and
improve profits. The Tencor workers who lose their jobs will be considered
collateral damage in the new global economy. Their humiliation will get
worse as they hear President Bush talk about jobs Americans won't do, and
as they listen to prognostications that Americans need to get better
training and educations to compete in the global economy. Nothing can be
more humiliating than listening to these idiots after being told to train
your replacement.
