I wish to clarify a few items in the newsletters titled "Worker Amnesty
and Opportunity Act of 2003". Everything in this newsletter is the
opinion of myself, with the exception of what is credited by Rosemary
Jenks, the NumbersUSA Capitol Hill staffer.
* The "Worker Amnesty and Opportunity Act", or H.R. 604, is sponsored
by Democratic Rep. Major Owens of New York, not Reps. Jeff Flake and
Jim Kolbe as stated in previous newsletters.
* I stated that HR 604 is flying through Congress with virtually no
opposition. Jenks differs with that opinion: "It has virtually no
chance of going anywhere anyway, though, because the House GOP
Leadership has said they won't support any kind of amnesty."
* Republican Reps. Jeff Flake and Jim Kolbe, both from Arizona, are
proposing their own bill that will bring more guest workers into the
country. Specifics of their bill have not been announced. Jeff Flake's
intentions can be seen by viewing his letter at
http://www.ZaZona.com/ShameH1B/Library/Politicians/Flake.htm
Jenks clarified that, "Flake and Kolbe have nothing to do with the
Owens bill. They are working on their own bill, but they haven't
introduced it yet, which is why we have no details on what it would
do."
NOTE: Representative Jeff Flake is a member of the House Immigration
Subcommittee so whatever bill he comes up with could get more support
than Owens.
* Senator Larry Craig of Idaho is working on another bill, and Jenks
added, "Senator Craig also has not yet introduced his agricultural
guest worker/amnesty bill. I know from his staff that they have a bill
drafted, but it hasn't been introduced."
